Hartford Superior Court Clerk Structure
Connecticut does not use a separately elected Hartford County clerk for Superior Court files. The correct office is the Clerk of the Superior Court at the court location that holds the record. For many Hartford Judicial District records, the starting contact is the Chief Clerk's Office at the courthouse on Washington Street. Family matters use the related Superior Court building across the street, and criminal or motor vehicle matters may route through Geographical Area 14 on Lafayette Street.
The clerk function is tied to case type and venue. A civil lawsuit, family case, housing matter, small claim, criminal docket, or motor vehicle case may all be Superior Court records, but the public search path and office contact can differ. Police reports, DOC inmate information, DMV records, town vital records, and probate case documents are not issued by the Superior Court clerk unless they were filed in a court case.

The Connecticut Judicial Branch Law Libraries page is one official support source for Hartford-area court users who need procedural and legal research help.
The law library is not the clerk, but it helps explain why Hartford court users may need both record access and court research support.
What Superior Court Clerk Offices Do
The Clerk of the Superior Court receives filings, maintains case files, tracks docket activity, issues notices and copies, receives certain payments, and helps route public access questions to the correct record channel. The clerk does not act as a lawyer, does not guarantee search results from third-party tools, and does not issue records held by police, DOC, DPH, DMV, or Probate Court.
- Directs Superior Court users to the right case lookup or courthouse location.
- Handles non-online court file access, older records, and copy questions when the file is public.
- Receives traffic-ticket mail payments through the Centralized Infractions Bureau process.
- Coordinates with court service center, family clerk, criminal clerk, and other location-specific offices.
The official Hartford courthouse image shows the Washington Street court building tied to many Hartford County Clerk of the Superior Court records.
That building is the main physical reference point for clerk questions after the online case systems have been checked.
Request Hartford County Certified Copies
A certified copy is usually needed when a court document must prove an official court action outside the case file. Hartford County users should first identify the docket number and court location, because the clerk needs enough detail to locate the file. If the record is sealed, erased, juvenile, or otherwise restricted, public copy access may not be available.
- Search the Judicial Branch case lookup system that matches the record type and note the docket number, party names, and court location.
- Call the clerk at the relevant location before travel when the file is old, sealed, archived, or not visible online.
- Ask whether the requested document is available to the public, whether certification is possible, and which payment methods are accepted.
- Submit the request in person or by the channel the clerk gives, then wait for the clerk to prepare the copy.
Hartford Superior Court Clerk Requests
The research did not locate one universal Superior Court copy request form for every Hartford County record type. A good clerk request still uses a consistent set of identifiers. Traffic-ticket mail payments use a separate Centralized Infractions Bureau process, while police reports, vital records, DOC information, and probate documents use their own agencies.
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Docket number | Strongly preferred | Use the exact docket number when known. |
| Party names | Yes | Include plaintiff and defendant, petitioner and respondent, or defendant name. |
| Court location | Yes | Hartford JD, Hartford G.A. 14, Hartford Housing, or another listed court filter. |
| Document type | Yes | Specify judgment, disposition, order, docket sheet, divorce decree, or other document. |
| Copy type | Yes | State whether plain or certified copies are needed. |
Hartford Superior Court Clerk Fees
Exact Superior Court copy fees were not located in the reviewed official pages, so fee-sensitive requests should be confirmed with the clerk before payment. The research did locate traffic, probate, and vital-record fees that are often confused with clerk fees. Probate fees are controlled by the Probate Court system, not the Superior Court clerk.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Superior Court plain or certified copy | Confirm with clerk |
| Traffic failure-to-respond reopening fee | $60 |
| Town-issued marriage, death, or civil union certificate | $20 |
| State-issued marriage, death, or civil union certificate | $20 |
| State-issued birth or stillbirth certificate | $30 |
Hartford Superior Court Clerk Search Channels
Online search comes before most clerk calls. The Judicial Branch separates case lookup by subject, and the clerk contact should match the search result or courthouse where the file is pending. If the record is outside the case file, the request goes to the agency that holds it under the Connecticut public-records framework.
- Case Look-up landing for statewide Judicial Branch case categories.
- Civil Inquiry for civil, family, housing, small claims, events, calendars, and notices.
- Criminal / Motor Vehicle Case Look-up for pending cases, convictions, daily dockets, and warrant links.
- CIBEpay for ticket payment, online ticket review, and not-guilty pleas.
The Public Defender Services judicial district office listing is not a clerk portal, but it helps criminal defendants distinguish court-record access from defense services.
That distinction matters because attorneys, prosecutors, defenders, police, and clerks each hold different pieces of the criminal case process.
Mail and Online Clerk Channels
Traffic-ticket payments by mail go to the Centralized Infractions Bureau, P.O. Box 5044, Hartford, CT 06102-5044. Checks and money orders should be payable to Clerk of Superior Court, and the ticket number should be written on the payment. Cash should not be mailed. For ticket questions, the Centralized Infractions Bureau customer service number is 860-263-2750.
For in-person access, use the court location tied to the case. Hartford Judicial District records route through 95 Washington Street. Family clerk questions route to 90 Washington Street at 860-706-5100. Court Service Center help is also at 90 Washington Street, 860-706-5064. G.A. 14 at 101 Lafayette Street is central for criminal, motor vehicle, and warrant-adjacent matters.
The public-records fallback also depends on the holder. A Hartford Police incident report belongs with Hartford Police Records Division, not the clerk. A DOC custody question belongs with the Department of Correction. A marriage certificate belongs with the town vital records office or State Vital Records Office. A probate file belongs with Probate Court. The Clerk of the Superior Court is the right contact for the court case file after the case type, docket number, and location are identified.
Note: The Clerk of the Superior Court can route court-file questions, but FOI requests for agency records go to the agency that has the record.
